What is Carnevale? Carnevale is the festival that leads into Lent. It's celebrated all over the world, but it is one of Italy's most joyful and historic traditions. Some of the most famous places to see Carnevale in Italy are Venice, renowned for its spectacular masks and costumes, Viareggio, for the incredible floats, and Ivrea, for the famous Battaglia delle Arance. Yes, a giant orange fight takes place!
I looked at this article with an Italian beginner student- it contained perhaps too many niche words. I can't say that I often mention papier-mâché in English or parades and floats very often. It just felt like missing out on discussing Carnevale for another year would be a travesty!
Did you know that different regions of Italy prepare their own Carnevale specialities? They are often fried and sweet with people indulging before the fasting for Lent begins.
