Yesterday, my nearest and dearest said to me, "Are you sure that you are not just being a busy idiot with your online presence and writing a blog that no- one comments on?"
I felt offended and a bit hurt, after all I'd only just published my blogs on my website the day before so there wasn't really any time for people to have made comments yet. The comment boxes on Webador the platform that I am using also look a bit scary as they ask for an email address so perhaps that was putting people off too. I justified myself by saying that my Facebook Business page kept giving me a bigger green line every time I posted and that the analytics showed that I was reaching more people and I hoped that meant more possible students. I also surmised that pointing people back to my website from Facebook and updating the website with a blog would drive more exposure. It is just an educated guess though, I'm just fumbling my way on the IT side. IT issues occur in lessons too, there's the odd hiccup in my online lessons where I forget to turn on my sound when sharing a video or audio clip. They also occur in face to face lessons too- why is it that my laptop won't connect to the 50" tv that I use as a board simply through the hdmi port, but it does work when I connect it through a usb c hub???
In some ways, my husband is of course correct. I'm no expert at IT and I keep making the mistake of publishing things too quickly and without "polishing" them in my enthusiasm to get more students to do what I actually enjoy and teach languages. It's a challenge to grow a business from scratch. Many would say after looking at my social media efforts, "Don't quit the day job!" Of course, that isn't an option as I have left my post in a school after nearly a decade there! The thing is I really do love teaching languages so I'll keep trying on here and if you, your friend, your work colleague etc wants to learn Italian or TEFL then do get in contact.
Happily or unhappily, I accidentally deleted my whole blog page yesterday. After the initial horror, I realised it was a rubbish blog page anyway and I'm slowly rebuilding it and making it better. It certainly has more of me in it! If you want to prove my husband wrong, feel free to leave me a comment on here.
I should also say that I did a little research into Busy Idiots. Recently, I've been frustrated watching the lack of revision from my eldest as GCSEs draw closer and closer. I've been doing lots of my blogs sitting in her room, whilst she scrolls on a number of screens, in fact more on the screens that are not actually the school iPad! Anyhow, perhaps we both need to digest the content of this excellent article on Busy Idiots.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE MUSINGS DO NOT CONSTITUE COMPLETE ADMISSION TO BEING A BUSY IDIOT!
