Why do Italians celebrate the 25th April? What is the purpose of this National Bank holiday?
On April 25, 1945, Italy was officially liberated from the fascist regime and Nazi occupation. The Festa della Liberazione is one of the country’s most important national holidays. In Rome, an official wreath-laying ceremony is held in the morning by the Italian President at the Altare della Patria. This state ceremony is the central official event of the day and is accompanied by military honours and security measures.
Do you know which dates other countries celebrate the end of the war? In the UK, we celebrate Victory day as VE day on May 8th as that is the day that Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced the end of WWII in a radio broadcast.
Do you want to teach an Italian learner more about this festival? Are you curious to read more about it in Italian? Here's a good text that also includes an audio transcript.
